Job Scam Emails

Recently, several students have been targeted in scam email campaigns.

We want to make you aware of what to look for, what to do if you receive an email scam, and who to contact. You may have received an email similar to the following two emails UTC students have reported receiving:

There are several ways to identify job scam emails:

1. The sender does not provide any contact information aside from the originating email address. A legitimate company representative will more than likely have an entire signature block which will contain their name, title, phone number, possibly their address and email address.
2. You are not addressed by name in the email. Typically, we have seen emails with greetings of "Hello" or "Dear Student" and not addressed to the student's first or last name. The sender will also indicate they received your information from a school admin or school database.
3. The sender will ask for your personal email or a way to text you. This is a way to make their conversations more difficult to track.
4. The email may appear to be from a legitimate company but the person does not have an actual relationship with the company. For example, the sender may say they work with Microsoft but their email address may actually read [email protected] - be diligent when reading their email addresses.
5. The email generates from a private email account. Legitimate companies should email from their corporate email accounts such as [email protected] or [email protected] 
6. The email may have noticeable spelling or grammar mistakes. Scam emailers do not take time to proofread or spellcheck their emails.

If you feel you have received a job scam email, DO NOT RESPOND TO THE EMAIL OR CLICK ON ANY LINKS CONTAINED IN THE EMAIL.
