About the Scholarship
The Phillips Scholarship in Free Enterprise is grounded in the principles of free market economics, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. The Program provides $3,000 in financial assistance for Rollins College of Business students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year. The scholarship is for one academic year.
The program is designed for students who possess a spirit and aptitude for understanding and appreciating the free enterprise system. By empowering individuals who embody the values of free markets and individual liberty, the program aims to shape future leaders who will advocate for personal responsibility, economic freedom, entrepreneurship, and innovation, fostering a more prosperous society.
The scholarship application is open to all UTC business majors who are sophomores, juniors or seniors. Scholarships are open to applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, citizenship, disability, age, or veteran status and are subject to the individual scholarship criteria.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a sophomore, junior, or senior business major enrolled or admitted to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
- Enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
- Demonstrated successful academic performance.
- Demonstrated interest in free market principles.
Recipients of the Phillips Scholarship in Free Enterprise are required to:
- Attend public lectures and events hosted by the Probasco Chair. This includes the Probasco Fall and Spring Lecture Series and the Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series.
- Participate in the Probasco Chair reading group.
- Participate in Rollins College of Business events related to free enterprise.
- Present their personal experience as a Phillips Scholar at the end of the academic year.
Recipients are also strongly encouraged, class schedule permitting, to take a course taught by the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise, Dr. Claudia Williamson Kramer. For Fall 2024, the course is Econ 4530, History of Economic Thought, taught Monday/Wednesday 2 to 3:15 p.m.
Recipients of the Phillips Scholarships in Free Enterprise (a.k.a. Phillips Free Enterprise Scholars) not only receive financial assistance to pursue their educational goals but also gain access to a network of mentors, industry professionals, and like-minded peers.
Scholarships are awarded through a competitive selection process that evaluates academic achievements, leadership potential, and a demonstrated interest in free market principles.
The scholarship application closes Monday, March 18, 2024. Phillips Scholarships in Free Enterprise will be selected in the Spring 2024 semester and the awards are effective the Fall 2024.
