Prior Learning Assessment, or PLA, is a nationally recognized process that provides an alternative method to assess and award college credit for learning gained outside the traditional classroom including work, military education, seminars, training programs, certification programs and volunteer/community service.
Our PLA portfolio assessment offers an opportunity for students who feel they have gained knowledge equivalent to college-level credit through prior learning to validate their claim. It was designed to provide students who have acquired knowledge through legitimate means outside an academic environment to gain college credit for those experiences through careful explanation and insight into the knowledge they have gained.

Course Requirements:
A B.A. in Latin American Studies requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, which includes required courses for the major, general education, electives and all University requirements. Students must be in good standing with the University and must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students are strongly encouraged to spend a semester abroad in Latin America, Spain, France or Portugal, which can be supported through financial aid.
Mission:
The Latin American Studies program cultivates and promotes UTC’s mission as a driving educational force that prioritizes “embracing diversity and inclusion” while preparing students to “go into the global community.” The Latin American Studies major provides students the opportunity to explore Latin America through a cross-disciplinary curriculum, examining the cultural, historical, economic and literary forces affecting our understanding of the Americas.
