Welcome to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga! Social work is a dynamic and rewarding profession with opportunities to make an impact in virtually every community and setting. Social workers support individuals, families, and communities while also working to address the larger systems and policies that shape people’s lives.
As a social worker, you can turn your passion for helping others into a career with purpose. Social workers practice as therapists, in hospitals and schools, mental health and community agencies, government and nonprofit organizations, the criminal justice system and victim services, child and adult protective services, rehabilitation settings, and many other fields. Some work directly with people and families, while others become leaders, administrators, advocates, policymakers, and community organizers.
Prepare for a Career That Makes a Difference
The UTC BSW degree prepares you for beginning generalist social work practice, giving you a broad foundation of knowledge, skills, and professional experiences that can be applied across populations, settings, and systems. Throughout the program, you will learn how to understand people within the context of their environments, assess needs and strengths, develop meaningful interventions, evaluate outcomes, and advocate for positive change.
But social work is more than what happens in a classroom. Your education will connect what you learn to the communities around you. Through field education (*link to page*), community experiences, hands-on learning, and engagement with social service organizations, you will have opportunities to begin developing the skills and confidence needed to enter the profession.
A BSW is challenging and rewarding. You will be expected to engage, think critically, reflect on your experiences, develop professional skills, and put what you learn into practice. In return, you will graduate with a strong foundation for a career dedicated to helping people, strengthening communities, and creating meaningful change.
