Ready to Apply to the BSW Program?
We’re excited that you’re interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga!
Admission to the BSW program is an important step in your journey toward becoming a professional social worker. The requirements below will help you determine whether you are ready to apply and what you need to complete before beginning upper-level social work coursework.
BSW Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to the BSW program, students must:
- Be admitted to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
- Have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Complete the following pre-social work courses with a passing grade:
- PSY 1010 - Introduction to Psychology
- SOCW 1100 - Introduction to Social Work
- ANTH 1200 - Cultural Anthropology, ECON 1010 - Macroeconomics, or ECON 1020 - Microeconomics
- SOCW 2070 - Interviewing Skills or THSP 1090 - Public Speaking
- Any Approved statistics course
Students should work closely with their academic advisor to determine which courses they have completed and which requirements remain before applying to the BSW program.
Applying to the BSW Program
Once you have completed the admission requirements, you are ready to apply to the BSW program.
How to Apply
- Log in to the UTC Application Portal using your UTC credentials.
- Select the “Other Applications” option.
- Select the BSW Application.
- Complete all required sections of the application.
- Review your application carefully and submit it.
Once your application has been submitted, the Social Work Program will review your application and notify you of your admission status.
Continuation Standards for Social Work Majors
The nature of the social work profession requires the following program continuation standards:
- Achieve a grade of “C” or higher in SOCW courses, and a “B” or higher on all field education-related courses.
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
- Maintain a social work major Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher on a 4.0 point scale in all foundation SOCW courses.
These standards help ensure that students are developing the academic knowledge, professional skills, and competencies necessary for successful social work practice.
Transfer Students
Students wishing to transfer to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Social Work Program from another accredited college or university must first apply to and be accepted to UTC. Once accepted to UTC, students will then follow the application process to be admitted to the UTC BSW program. Transfer social work majors will have their transcripts evaluated by their assigned advisor in the Social Work Program as well as by the University Registrar. Credit will be granted for courses that are comparable to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga course and for which the student has earned a grade of "C" or better.
Students currently/previously enrolled at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who are choosing to transfer to the Social Work Program will have their transcripts reviewed by an advisor in the Social Work Program and will discuss the reason(s) for the transfer.
Students are admitted into the Social Work Program from more than one source, including as a first year student, an external transfer student, or an internal transfer student. Students are accepted based on a competitive evaluation of their applications by the UTC Admissions Office and Social Work Faculty
