English

Degree(s) available: Bachelor Minor Master

What is the Study of English?
“Unless you are at home in metaphor,” Robert Frost wrote—unless you are able to deal with the complexities, implications and surprises of the world that surrounds us —then “you are lost.”

As one of the humanities, the discipline of English concerns itself with how literature, language and writing work in the world. English majors engage in the critical and creative study and practice of how these three threads intertwine, shape the self and our perceptions of others and create and govern the cultures of the world.

Why Choose English at UTC?
The English Department offers specialization tracks in Rhetoric and Professional Writing, Creative Writing and Literary Studies, taught by dedicated faculty who have won awards both for their publications and for their teaching. Classes are small and foster discussion, providing opportunities for community in and out of the classroom. English majors have a faculty mentor to help them navigate the program and provide direction for life after graduation. Our programs offer insight into the human condition and help students develop their creativity and rhetorical savvy. English majors are employed in a wide range of careers, and our Internship Program has placed students at City Farms, SoLit, Scenic Trend, Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, PBS, local law firms, local realtors, and the UTC Library.

How the Degree Works:
History courses are designed to produce a marketable set of skills that are introduced, reinforced and mastered at successive course levels throughout the degree. Early in the program, students learn the basics of historical thinking, such as how to synthesize, analyze and interpret historical knowledge, as well as how to communicate this knowledge in speaking and writing for different audiences. As they advance in the program, students practice and master these skills, culminating in small seminar classes and capstone project. The degree is structured so students are exposed to United States, European and world histories at all course levels and different chronological rates.

History Department Opportunities:

  • Internships: we have partnered with many of our area's most outstanding historical and cultural institutions to offer for-credit internships at a wide variety of museums, cultural centers and national parks.
  • Minors: usually six courses in a particular field of study; we are home to the History and Africana Studies minors.
  • Events: we sponsor a number of annual guest lectures, faculty debates and responses to current events and other opportunities for students to enrich their history education and enhance their professional networks throughout the year.
