Dr. Stuart M. Benkert currently serves as the Head of the Department of Performing Arts. Previously Benkert was Assistant Provost of Complete College and Student Success and Interim Head of the Department of Economics.

In 2012 Dr. Benkert was selected as an American Council on Education Leadership Fellow. During this time Benkert interned with the Tennessee Higher Education Commission focusing on performance funding and policy compliance. 

Previous to his fellowship Dr. Benkert was Director of Bands and held rank as Professor of Music. Professionally, Benkert has designed over 300 shows for marching bands, drum corps, and winter pageantry programs, for clients around the world and created the Summer Drill Design Institute where he has provided design instruction to more than 100 band directors. As a band director Dr. Benkert conducted many scholastic honor bands and as a professional conductor he has provided conducting clinics and performances for chamber music in Singapore, Hong Kong, and throughout Europe.

Dr. Benkert’s area of interest now lies in strategic planning and leadership development. In these areas he has consulted with corporations and other institutions around the nation. Currently, Dr. Benkert serves as a Planning Academy Member for the Society of College and University Planning and Chair of the Leadership Development Committee for the International Conference of Fine Arts Deans.
