Summer Institutes Information
UTC Summer Pedagogy and Conducting Institutes
What is it?
The UTC Summer Pedagogy and Conducting Institutes are for music educators and ensemble directors hoping to improve and refine their conducting and rehearsal techniques while learning from nationally and internationally recognized clinicians. The city of Chattanooga and campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga provide a scenic backdrop for these rigorous yet inspirational institutes that include morning lectures, drills, and exercises, and afternoon rehearsals with an ensemble. Conducting Fellows will have daily podium time in a masterclass setting with feedback provided by our guest clinicians along with UTC music faculty.

“UTC brought world class music educators and conductors to provide a truly priceless experience for music educators at any point in their career. I will be participating every year this is offered! Thank you to all UTC faculty and staff for organizing such an amazing event! Go Mocs!”
“I would recommend the UTC Pedagogy and Conducting Institute to anyone in the education field. All sessions helped me refine my rehearsal skills in addition to conducting as efficiently and effectively as possible. I can’t wait to use what I learned in the classroom!”
“Wherever you are in your music education or conducting career, do yourself a favor and register for this institute!”
Ways to Participate
There are separate Choral and Instrumental tracks, each with two one-week Institutes, for four Institutes in total. Institute participants can register for 3 hours of graduate credit (2 weeks required) or select the non-credit option for 30 or 60 professional development hours (1 week or 2 weeks, respectively).
In addition, participants who attend for professional development only (non-credit) can attend as an Auditor for reduced fees. Auditors will attend every session, but during rehearsal masterclasses will only perform with the ensemble and will not have podium time for feedback from the clinicians. Finally, teachers working for the Hamilton County Schools can audit for a drastically discounted rate! See below for details.
