Piano Ensemble
Piano Ensemble at UTC, now called Collaborative Piano, provides music students with opportunities to play four-hand piano duets, piano duo, six hand, and eight hand piano ensemble repertoire. Students in this ensemble collaborate with other pianists and experience learning a wide variety of repertoire originally written for piano four hand or duo piano, and repertoire arranged for up to eight pianists. Students increase their sight reading ability through piano duets, their sense of pulse, and experience a greater social component to performing the piano that compliments their individual, applied study.
Playing duets elevates the level of musicianship to students, even at the first rehearsal. Students learn to give attention to timing, pulse, sound, dynamics, rhythm, and melody and learn to listen to create their overall sound, together. Beyond piano four hand and two piano repertoire, students in Collaborative Piano have opportunities to collaborative with vocalists, instrumentalists, small chamber ensemble, and even large ensemble, depending on the repertoire and performances scheduled each semester. Students in Collaborative Piano have many opportunities to immerse themselves into the studios and ensembles within the music department and build connections and community through their partnerships that enrich their musical education while at UTC.
