Wind Ensemble
The UTC Wind Ensemble is the premier concert ensemble at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The UTC Wind Ensemble performs a varied repertoire ranging from the most cutting-edge literature to cornerstone pieces from the wind band literature. Membership in the UTC Wind Ensemble is open to all UTC students, regardless of major, and seating in the ensemble is based on a audition that takes place prior to the semester's start. The UTC Wind Ensemble performs several concerts each year, and is also heavily involved in the Tri-State Honor Band in January and the Tri-State Festival of Winds in April. The UTC Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Professor Randall Coleman and Professor Rob Truan. Feel free to email Professor Coleman with any questions about the UTC Wind Ensemble here: [email protected].
Audition Information
All students, regardless of major, will take part in the placement auditions for the UTC Wind Ensemble beginning with the fall semester, 2023. Students should prepare the audition excerpts provided and perform the excerpts for a panel of faculty members to determine chair placement in the UTC Wind Ensemble and any other concert ensembles that might be necessary. In most cases, the band directors and applied faculty member will be the panel who will listen to the performances.
Students should take time to seek audio examples of the selected excerpts; the tempos marked are GOAL tempo markings. If you don’t feel comfortable performing the excerpt at the marked tempo, select the tempo that you can perform the excerpt with the best clarity and musicality.
Students should check the excerpts for brackets or parenthesis. If there are brackets in the excerpt, you are only required to play the sections within the brackets.
There will be on brief sightreading exercise for each instrument. You will be given the marked tempo, and a period of time to study the sightreading excerpt silently. You will then be asked to perform the excerpt.
The entire audition will take between 5 and 7 minutes to complete. There will be an opportunity for you to sign up for a specific time for your audition. You should arrive prior to that time for your warmup, and you should be outside the audition room no later than 5 minutes prior to your audition time.
Results will be posted outside the UTC Band Office prior to the first rehearsal for the semester of the UTC Wind Ensemble. Music folders will also be available outside the UTC Band office when the roster/results are posted.
Please reach out to Professor Coleman if you have any questions or concerns.
