Music Minors

If you enjoy music and want to continue studying or performing while pursuing another major, a music minor at UTC may be a great fit for you.

Music can remain an important part of your personal and professional life long after college. Whether you are interested in performance, composition, or ensemble participation, UTC offers several ways to continue your musical growth.

Music Minor Options

The UTC Department of Music offers three minors:

Collaborative Music

Designed for students who participate in:

  • Band
  • Choir
  • Orchestra

This minor supports students who want to continue performing in ensembles while majoring in another field.

Music Composition

Designed for students interested in:

  • Writing original music
  • Learning composition techniques
  • Developing creative musical skills
Music Performance

Designed for students who want to:

  • Continue private study on an instrument or voice
  • Improve performance skills
  • Explore advanced musical training

  • Collaborative Music Minor – 21 credit hours
  • Music Composition Minor – 24 credit hours
  • Music Performance Minor – 21 credit hours

How to Become a Music Minor

Step 1 – Meet with a Music Advisor

Contact the UTC Department of Music to schedule a meeting with a music advisor. During this meeting, students will discuss:

  • Musical background and experience
  • Academic interests
  • Course planning

Step 2 – Complete an Audition (If Required)

Some minors may require an audition for applied study. Auditions help determine:

  • Readiness for college-level instruction
  • Appropriate placement level

Audition dates are announced each academic year.

Step 3 – Prepare for the Audition

Students should review audition requirements and prepare the required materials before their audition date.
