Music Undergraduate Programs
Undergraduate Music Programs
The UTC Department of Music offers undergraduate degree programs for students interested in performance, teaching, composition, and broad-based music study.
Students may choose from the following degree options:
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music
- Bachelor of Music (B.M.)
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music
The Bachelor of Arts in Music is designed for students who want a strong liberal arts education while majoring in music.
About one-third of the program is in music courses, allowing students to take more electives outside the department. This option is ideal for students who want flexibility to explore other academic interests.
Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Concentrations
The Bachelor of Music is a more focused professional degree. About two-thirds of the program is in music coursework.
The Bachelor of Music degree offers concentrations in:
- Vocal Music Education
- Instrumental Music Education
- Vocal Performance
- Instrumental Performance
- Theory/Composition
- Music Therapy
Students in the Music Education concentration complete coursework in both music and teaching methods and earn teacher certification upon graduation.
Music Minors
UTC also offers music minors in:
- Music Performance
- Music Theory
- Composition
These minors are ideal for students who want to continue studying music while majoring in another field.
General Education Requirements
All music degree programs include UTC general education courses in the following areas:
- Rhetoric and Composition – 6 hours
- Mathematics and Statistics – 6 hours
- Natural Sciences – 7–8 hours
- Humanities and Fine Arts – 6 hours
- Cultures and Civilizations – 9 hours
- Behavioral and Social Sciences – 6 hours
Minimum General Education Total: 41 Hours
Additional Degree Requirements
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Students must also complete:
- Two years of foreign language
- At least 18 hours in a minor
Bachelor of Music in Music Education
Students must also complete:
- 6 hours in Psychology or Early Childhood Education
- 21 hours in the College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies
All bachelor’s degree programs require a minimum of 120 credit hours.

Admission Requirements
To apply for a music degree program, students must:
- Complete a live audition on their primary instrument or voice
- Take a Music Theory Diagnostic/Proficiency Exam
Placement Information
Applied lesson placement is based on audition results.
Students who do not meet the minimum score on the Music Theory Diagnostic Exam must complete a music fundamentals course with a grade of C or higher.
Students whose audition or exam results indicate that they may not be prepared for success in the major may be advised to consider another program.
