Multifarious, a guest jazz trio, in concert

Feb 27, 7:30pm EST

7:30 PM to 9:30 PM - Cadek 200 Assembly Hall: The UTC Department of Performing Arts (Music) proudly presents Multifarious jazz trio in concert on Thursday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cadek Recital Hall, on the UTC Campus. This concert is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Ruth S. Holmberg Professor of American Music. Cadek Recital Hall is located on the UTC Campus at 725 Oak Street, 37403. Parking is free in the evenings, and the Cadek building and Recital Hall are handicapped accessible. Multifarious is an eclectic international trio with Sue McKenzie playing saxophones, Susan Mayo on cello, and Paul Elwood on banjo. Two of these instruments are not often associated with jazz, yet Multifarious makes the combination believable and enjoyable. In addition to playing very listenable jazz, the trio weaves inventive improvisations amongst diverse sounds. They have played concerts in the USA, Scotland (Broadcast, Glasgow), France ("Le Jam" and Le Corbusier, Marseille) and Croatia (Kontesa Jazz Club, Zagreb). Their debut album will be released in early 2020 alongside gigs and workshops in Georgia (US, Feb 2020) and Poland (Katowice JazzArt Festival). Sue McKenzie (“an exceptional saxophonist” - Saxophone Journal Magazine / “faultless technical control” - Gramophone Magazine) plays in a variety of contexts: jazz, world music, improvising, and classical (recording for Delphian Records). She was guest artist at the RADD Jazz Series, University of Wisconsin River Falls, USA (2019) and other recent gigs include the 606 Club / Jazz Cafe (London), West Holts Stage (Glastonbury) as well as with BBC DJ Sara Cox and Australian DJ HDTM. She works regularly with the Glasgow Improvisors Orchestra and recently wrote “Faramach Suite” (for saxophone sextet and percussion) which received its world premiere in Croatia, 2018, featuring players from Costa Rica and Canada. Paul Elwood, banjo and composer, is active in experimental, bluegrass, and jazz music. In 2015 he played on a premiere by experimental music pioneer Alvin Lucier and has collaborated with guitarist Jean-Marc Montera, legendary composer Christian Wolff, percussionist Famoudou Don Moye, guitarist Eugene Chadbourne, cellist Hank Roberts, French saxophonist Raphaël Imbert, and the Callithumpian Consort of the New England Conservatory, Zeitgeist, bluegrass legend John Hartford, and pipa player Min Xiao-Fen, among many others. He is on the faculty of University of Northern Colorado. This will be his third visit to Chattanooga as a musician. Susan Mayo is active not only in the classical world, playing with the Wichita Symphony, but can also be seen with the Poke Salad Orchestra, a string trio firmly rooted in American tradition; the WC Quartet, one of very few improvising string quartets; and the 21 Century Projects collective, a creative collaborative of musicians, visual artists, and dancers. She has collaborated on a variety of projects writing works for the WC Quartet and was recently awarded a Tallgrass Artist Residence. See utc.edu/music for this and other musical events at UTC.
