Your Next Steps to Be a Music Major...
So, you have decided you want to come to UTC and major in music? We are thrilled that you have decided to join us. However, before you can be a music major, there are a few steps you have to take whether you are enrolling as a Freshman, a transfer student, or a UTC student who is changing his major. Use this checklist to make sure you cover all your bases.
Step 1: Enroll in UTC
We have a whole department that deals with enrolling in UTC: the ADMISSIONS DEPARTMENT. They have several people on staff who can answer any question you might have about enrolling.
Step 2: Schedule your audition
You must schedule an audition for placement in applied instruction or if you want to audition for a performance grant. It is important that you schedule an audition as soon as possible. You may complete the online audition request form by clicking here: Audition Registration. Your audition date and time are not confirmed until you have submitted this application and received confirmation from the First-Year Coordinator. The audition dates for 2023-2024 are February 24 and March 23, 2024. Detailed information about auditions will be forthcoming.
Step 3: Prepare your audition
Every student who enrolls in the Music Department must perform a live audition in front of some of the music department faculty. You and your private teacher should take a look at our AUDITION REQUIREMENTS and select pieces for you to perform at your audition. Once you select these, practice them until they are as close to perfect as you can achieve. This audition will determine your readiness for college-level instrument or voice instruction and place you in the proper level of study.
Step 4: Music Theory Prep Course
Music majors must complete an online theory prep course in their first semester (fall) in order to enroll in Musicianship I and Aural Skills I in the spring term. Entering music students must demonstrate proficiency in fundamental musicianship skills prior to enrolling in certain required music courses.
If you have questions about any step of this process, please contact the Music Department by phone at 423-425-4601, by email at [email protected].
Other Questions?
The Music Department offers around 80 concerts during the fall and spring terms, most of which are free. The concerts include performances by our own distinguished faculty, student recitals, ensemble performances, and guest artists. See our calendar of events for upcoming concert information including times, location, and cost, if any, or stop by the Fine Arts Center room 308 and request an appointment to discuss your questions.
