UTC Music Department Audition Policy

Music Major Auditions

Any student wishing to declare a Bachelor of Music (BM), any concentration, or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music must complete an audition before being fully admitted to the music major.

Students should audition before a panel of UTC Music Faculty on one of the following 2026–2027 Music Department Audition Days:

December 3, 2026 (Honor Band only)
January 23, 2027
February 20, 2027

The audition will consist of:

Performance of two contrasting solos
Demonstration of musicianship skills, which may include scales, tonal memory, sight-reading, and related skills
Completion of the written Musicianship Diagnostic

Audition Format

All required auditions must be conducted in person before a panel of UTC Music Faculty. While a video audition is acceptable for approval for MUS 0xxx applied study, a video audition is not accepted as a substitute for the required in-person audition for Music majors or minors.

Students Who Miss the Regular Audition Days

Students who do not audition on one of the scheduled Audition Days will follow the procedures below based on when they begin the process.

Students Who Begin the Process Before Semester-End Juries

Students who begin the process before the Semester-End Juries (April 28–May 4) must complete the full audition, including the Musicianship Diagnostic, during the Semester-End Jury for their instrument area:

Voice (April 28, 2027)
Piano (April 29, 2027)
Strings (April 30, 2027)
Brass and Woodwind (May 3, 2027)
Percussion (May 4, 2027)

Students Who Begin the Process After Semester-End Juries

Students who begin the process after the Semester-End Juries will follow different procedures depending on whether they intend to pursue the BA or BM in Music.

BA Music Students

Students intending to pursue the BA in Music will:

Attend UTC orientation.
Be initially scheduled for General Education courses and an appropriate ensemble.
Have the option of taking MUS 1020 Fundamentals of Music and/or MUS 0xxx Applied Instruction (video audition required).
Complete an audition during the Semester-End Jury for their instrument area at the conclusion of the fall semester.
Upon successful completion of the audition, begin applied lessons at the MUS 1xxx level in the spring semester of their first year.
Complete the Musicianship Diagnostic at a designated time during the spring semester.
Begin the Musicianship 1 suite in the fall semester of their second year.

BM Music Students

Students intending to pursue a BM in Music, any concentration, will:

Attend UTC orientation and complete the Musicianship Diagnostic at orientation.
Be initially enrolled in the BA Music program and scheduled for courses according to the BA Music curriculum, including General Education courses and an appropriate ensemble, along with the Musicianship 1 suite.
Have the option of taking MUS 0xxx Applied Instruction (video audition required).
Complete an audition during the Semester-End Jury for their instrument area at the conclusion of the fall semester.
If the audition outcome supports admission to the intended BM concentration, formally change their major to the appropriate BM Music program and begin enrolling in courses specific to that degree and concentration, including applied lessons at the MUS 2xxx level.

Students who do not meet the audition requirements for the intended BM Music program will be advised regarding an appropriate academic pathway, which may include the BA in Music or another major.

Note: This pathway may result in delayed graduation for students interested in pursuing BM degrees.

Music Minor Auditions

Auditions are required for students declaring a Music minor; however, the minor does not need to be declared prior to the first semester.

Students who wish to begin the minor in their first semester may audition before a panel of UTC Music faculty on any of the scheduled 2026–2027 Music Department Audition Days:

December 3, 2026 (Honor Band only)
January 23, 2027
February 20, 2027

Students who choose not to audition on these dates may audition during a Semester-End Jury at the conclusion of any fall or spring semester.
