“Therapeutic Yoga Works: Applying Therapeutic Yoga Practices into Your Patient Practice & Personal Self-Care Regimen to Positively Impact Your Long-Term Clinical Care” by Dr. Nydia Darby, PT, DPT, E-RYT500, CIAYT
Dr. Nydia Darby reviews the current literature and evidence supporting yoga breathwork and therapeutic yoga practices as they can be applied to a variety of physical therapy practice settings. Student participants engage with a Therapeutic Yoga practice guided by Dr. Darby, aimed at providing adaptive movements for varying levels of participation. Dr. Darby is an experienced yoga educator, writer, published author, and international presenter on Therapeutic Yoga Lifestyle practices. Additionally, she collaborates with University of Texas Health in San Antonio as a published yoga and cancer researcher. She developed the Therapeutic Astanga Method© over 40 years and is the Owner & Creative Director of Nydia’s Yoga Therapy Studio and the Open Hand Institute in San Antonio, Texas. Recently, Dr. Darby published, “Therapeutic Yoga Works: A Gentle Approach to Eliminating Back Pain and Improving Functional Mobility for Life.”

“Treating & Understanding Limited Proficiency Patients” by Cynthia Peinado, Certified Spanish Medical Interpreter
Ms. Peinado discusses rules and regulations guiding provision of Medical Interpreters in the healthcare setting, as well as provides participants with demonstration of engaging online interpreter services in real-time to improve clinician understanding of service utilization. Ms. Peinado is an accomplished medical interpreter who serves the Nashville area and is passionate about connecting patients with necessary interpreting services.

"Wilderness Physical Therapy: What is it? How can you get involved?" Paul Beattie, PT, PhD, FAPTA, WEMT
Dr. Beattie discusses the numerous potential professional and volunteer roles of the Wilderness Physical Therapist. Clinical scenarios are used to illustrate the evaluation and management of people who have traumatic or medical emergencies in the back country. Dr. Beattie is a Distinguished Clinical Professor Emeritus in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He is a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA and has been a practicing Physical Therapist for 46 years. Dr. Beattie is a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician and has been a Wilderness First Aid instructor for 15 years.

"APTA Fit for the Future: 100 Years of Training," Susan A. Appling, PT, DPT, PhD.
Dr. Appling discusses ways in which this 100 years of training has prepared us for our second century, as we continue to grow our profession and attend to societal needs. Dr. Appling is an Associate Professor, Clinical, in the Physical Therapy Division, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The Ohio State University. She is a board certified orthopaedic clinical specialist and certified manual therapist. Dr. Appling was elected to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Board of Directors in 2015. She has served as the Board chair of the Centennial Steering Committee since its formation in 2017. Dr. Appling has also served as an APTA representative to the Education Leadership Partnership since its inception and as chair in 2019-2020. She has served on the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy Board of Directors and as Editor of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Practice.

This year we are pleased to introduce Dr. Tiffany Lamonde, owner of Lamonde Wellness in Cumming, GA where she offers a variety of professional services including outpatient physical therapy, nutrition counseling, and personal training. Dr. Lamondeâs pursuit of clinical excellence has led her to several post-graduate credentials including fellow status with the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT) and recognition as a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS).

Nicole Stout, DPT, CLT-LANA, FAPTA a renowned health care researcher, consultant, educator, advocate and leader in cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema presents âPhysical Activity to Prevent Cancer and Promote Wellness Among Survivors of Cancerâ to attendees of the forum. Dr. Stout supports the Office of Strategic Research at the National Institutes of Health-Rehabilitation Medicine Department by leading the Cancer Rehabilitation Initiative and serves on the ACSM presidential Taskforce on Exercise Oncology.

Approximately 300 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students attended the 9th Annual PT Forum sponsored by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga DPT program and the Chattanooga State Technical Community College PTA program on January 15, 2009. The guest speaker was Dr. Ethel Frese, a native of Chattanooga and current President of the Cardiopulmonary Section of the APTA. The timely topic addressed the importance of monitoring vital signs as therapists and assistants work with our patient population. Dr. Joe Black, TPTA President, welcomed the attendees and encouraged participation in association activities. We were also thrilled to welcome back to our campus approximately 50 of our UTC PT grads.
