Student Activities
Students have the opportunity to participate in multiple community service projects while studying in the PT program. For example, in Human Growth and Development, students actively apply course materials to develop health, wellness, and developmental screenings for children under 4 years of age and older adults over the age of 65. In the pediatric motor evaluation, students work in small groups to evaluate preschool children for appropriate gross, fine, and oral motor development. As needed, students then develop intervention strategies for the preschool teachers and parents. In the geriatric wellness project, students develop and implement a fall-risk assessment. Local health clubs and the shopping malls serve as screening sites.
In a variety of the management courses, students work closely with faculty in screening clinics to examine, evaluate, and provide health promotion and fitness advice and referral for treatment for individuals with a variety of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Over the past few years, individuals with athletic injuries, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and brain injury have benefited from the clinics.
Camp Horizon
Each August, several UTC DPT students participate in Camp Horizon, held at Camp Lookout, located on Lookout Mountain. Camp Horizon was developed and implemented by a UTC DPT graduate, Lindsey Sharpe and her husband, Steven. The purpose of Camp Horizon is to allow kids with physical disabilities the opportunity to broaden their horizons by spending time with other kids in similar situations in the outdoor environment. Each camper is paired up with a student volunteer for the duration of the weekend. The primary staff support comes from the Children's Therapy Department (PT, OT, SLP) of Children's Hospital at Erlanger and UTC faculty. Counselors are DPT and OTD students, with priority given to DPT III and OTD II classes. Each camper is paired with one or two counselors who facilitate the child's engagement in the camp activities. Activities include swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, archery, fishing, tie‐dye pillow and other crafts. Campers also participate in a campfire complete with a talent show and s'mores.
