Placement Information
What classes do I take?
Mathematics Placement
Your major determines which Mathematics courses with the Quantitative Reasoning general education category you should take – however, most Mathematics courses at UTC require a minimum ACT or SAT Mathematics subscore or completion of a placement option prior to enrolling in the course. If you are a new student, transferring in any college credits for dual enrollment courses, Advanced Placement (AP) scores or International Baccalaureate (IB) scores may also impact which Mathematics course you begin with at UTC.
You can find the minimum requirements for many Mathematics courses HERE. If at any point you decide to change your major, be aware that you may be required to take additional Mathematics courses to fulfill requirements for that major.
If you are a new UTC student who has been pre-registered for your first semester of courses, check out the video HERE for more information about Mathematics placement. Please note that Quantitative Reasoning requirements for specific majors included in the video are subject to change, as requirements may change year to year. Check with your advisor for the most up to date information.

- If your ACT English subscore is a 20 or lower, your SAT Verbal subscore is a 520 or lower, or you did not submit a standardized test score to UTC you should begin your English courses at UTC with ENGL 1011.
- If your ACT English subscore is between a 21 and 29 or your SAT Verbal subscore is between a 530 and 670, you should begin your English courses at UTC with ENGL 1010.
- If your ACT English subscore is a 30 or higher or your SAT Verbal subscore is a 680 or higher, you should begin your English courses at UTC with ENGL 1020.
If you are a new UTC student who has been pre-registered for your first semester of courses, check out the video HERE for more information regarding English placement.
