Math Placement Criteria
Math Course Placement
Use the table below with your ACT (SAT) Math subscore or previous course to determine whether you’ve met the prerequisites for the MATH course you wish to take. Courses in parentheses are similar courses previously offered at UTC or offered at other institutions that transfer as these courses.
UTC Table
| MATH Course Number | Prerequisite Course | Minimum ACT (SAT) Math Subscore (or equivalent Math Placement Test) | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1007* | None | None | ||
| 1010 | None | None | ||
| 1130 | 1007 (1006, 1030) or Step Ahead Math Program | or | 19 (510) | |
| 1410 | 1007 (1006, 1030) or Step Ahead Math Program | or | 19 (510) | |
| 1420 | 1410 | or | 26 (610) | |
| 1530 | None | None | ||
| 1730 | 1130 (1720) | or | 24 (570) | |
| 1830 | 1130 (1710) | or | 26 (610) | |
| 1950** | 1730 (1720) | or | 28 (660) |
*MATH 1007 is a developmental math course – it will not count towards your UTC degree.
**MATH 1950 requires knowledge of trigonometry. In addition to having the stated ACT (SAT) math subscore, students must also have taken at least one semester of high school trigonometry.
Note: Beginning Fall 2026, 3 math courses have course number changes:
- MATH 1530 was previously 2100
- MATH 1410 was previously 2150
- MATH 1420 was previously 2160
Other Ways to Satisfy MATH Course Prerequisites
- Take a college-level course, at another institution, that transfers to UTC as the needed prerequisite course. Make sure that the course credit officially transfers to UTC.
- Achieve an appropriate score on a college credit exam (AP or CLEP). Be sure your scores are sent to UTC.
- The Department of Mathematics offers a one-time online Math Placement Test. Visit the Math Placement Test webpage for more information.
- The Department of Mathematics offers the Step Ahead Math Boot Camp that, if a passing grade is achieved, enable students to satisfy prerequisites for MATH 1130/1410. Visit the Step Ahead Math Boot Camp Program webpage for more information.
