NBCOT Outcomes - National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy
Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the national certification examination for the occupational therapist. The National Board administers this examination for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this examination, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). Most states require licensure to practice, and state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Please note that in order to take the national certification examination the following questions will be asked:

Have you ever been charged with or convicted of a felony? (NOTE: Applicants must answer affirmatively if records, charges, or convictions have been pardoned, expunged, released or sealed.)

Have you ever had any professional license, registration, or certification revoked, suspended or subject to probationary conditions by a regulatory authority or certification board?

Have you ever been found by any court, administrative, or disciplinary proceeding to have committed negligence, malpractice, recklessness, or willful or intentional misconduct that resulted in harm to another?

Have you ever been suspended and/or expelled from a college or university?
As an applicant to this program, you will be required to complete a background check. You must have a positive (good) report in order to matriculate into the program. Or, you must complete the Early Determination Review and provide documentation that you are eligible to take the NBCOT examination.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
Students must complete 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork as well as an individual 14-week capstone experience within 12 months following the completion of the didactic portion of the program. The doctoral capstone experience must be started after completion of all coursework and Level II fieldwork as well as completion of preparatory activities defined in 2018 ACOTE OTD Standard D.1.3.
