DET & TOEFL Preparation
At the end of each session, students are required to take the Duolingo English Test.
This is an internet-based test used to measure the progress students have made during the semester. It may also be used for undergraduate and graduate level admissions at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Once a student has attained the target Duolingo English Test or TOEFL score, they are no longer eligible for study in the ESL Institute at UTC.
Students who wish to repeat level six may submit a formal request providing a specific reason for needing to repeat the level (e.g. they have failed the course or its section; they have not yet achieved the DET or TOEFL score necessary for undergraduate or graduate admission; or they would like to work more on particular skills they need to master).
Students may also take the computer-based TOEFL exam. The UTC Testing Center is a Certified Test Administration Site (CTAS) and has been approved by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to provide the TOEFL iBT test. Extra fees apply.
- UTC undergraduate programs require a DET score of 85 for admission.
- Most UTC graduate programs require a minimum DET score of 100 for admission. (Please note that score requirements may vary by program.)
The TOEFL iBT code for UTC is 1831.
