Creative Writing Awards & Scholarships

Ready to share your poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction? Your creative work may earn you one of our annual creative writing awards. 

Sally B. Young Critical Writing Award

Have you written a stellar essay for one of your undergraduate English classes? Submit your work to the Sally B. Young Critical Writing Award for the best critical essay written during the previous calendar year.  

Rhetoric and Professional Writing Award

Have you created an amazing project for a rhetoric and professional writing course you took at UTC during the current or previous calendar year (spring, summer, or fall terms)? Then you should submit your work to be considered for the Rhetoric and Professional Writing Award.

Young Southern Student Writers

Are you a Hamilton County, Tennessee K-12 teacher or homeschool supervisor? Help us celebrate young local writers by submitting student work to the Young Southern Student Writers Contest. 

Notification of Winners

We announce winners of the undergraduate and graduate contests at the English Department Banquet held each spring.

We notify Chattanooga-area teachers of the Young Southern Student Writers Contest winners each spring and recognize the winning students at the YSSW Awards Ceremony in April.
