Welcome to the UTC English Department
So you're considering the English major?
Maybe you already know that being an English major is a mind-expanding experience. Our programs offer insight into the human condition and help you develop your creativity and rhetorical savvy.
But an English degree will also prepare you for a career after graduation. English majors have led businesses as successful and diverse as YouTube, Walt Disney Company, and Match.com.
Our graduates are entrepreneurs, business executives, lawyers, television script writers, novelists, marketing professionals, technical writers, and more.
Follow our podcast, English Matters, to learn more about the accomplishments of our faculty and students.
“Unless you are at home in metaphor,” Robert Frost wrote—unless you are able to deal with the complexities, implications and surprises of the world that surrounds us —then “you are lost.”
We prepare you for life beyond college, adding to your inventory of competencies and teaching you to hold complex and sometimes contradictory elements in balance.
Most importantly, we’ll help you find your way, your voice—whether you’re analyzing texts or writing your own.
Our programs engage the imagination and communicate a sense of wonder and excitement about written culture.
We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in Literature, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric & Professional Writing.
But we do more than teach amazing classes—we give students opportunities to edit and produce publications, hold internships, engage with community projects, and attend conferences around the country.
Study with award-winning professors students love. Our faculty includes Fulbright Fellows, NEA and Guggenheim grantees, sports writers, Tolkien scholars, gamers, pop culture fiends, and more.
