Responsibilities of the Program Advisor and Advisee

The role of the Program Advisor is to provide guidance and advice relating to the academic program, Comprehensive Assessment, research interests, and graduation pathway. Participants may consult with the Program Advisor during all phases of their doctoral journey. The program advising process can be described as a mutual relationship in which the participant and Program Advisor work together. While the Program Office strives to provide accurate, expedient, and high-quality support, the participant is expected to be adequately informed, engaged and proactive throughout the program of study.

Upon successful completion of all course work, successful passage of the Comprehensive Assessment,  transition to Candidacy, and successful completion of LEAD 7750r Research Pre-Project of Practice, additional advisement responsibilities are accepted by the Research Project of Practice Chair.

Responsibilities of Program Advisor

Responsibilities of Advisee
  • Actively engage in the foundational course (formerly Induction experience)
  • Maintain familiarity with university/program policies
  • Make a personal commitment to supporting the learning process of the LEAD program by facilitating doctoral-level instruction/mentoring, engaging in research, and serving as a member of the community of scholar-practitioners
  • Support a multidisciplinary approach to adult learning in an online delivery format
  • Monitor the academic progress of the advisee and correspond with the advisee in a timely manner regarding any issues
  • Guide the advisee in the selection and approval of elective course work
  • Monitor the advisee’s progress in preparing for the Comprehensive Assessment
  • Oversee the advisee’s transition to the Research Project of Practice
  • Counsel the advisee if any personal or professional issues interfere with academic performance
  • Address any professional fitness issues
  • Actively engage in the foundational course (formerly Induction experience) and complete all deliverables
  • Maintain familiarity with university/program policies
  • Take responsibility for appropriately saving (and backing up) all papers and deliverables throughout doctoral coursework
  • Complete and file the Memorandum of Understanding during the first semester of course enrollment
  • Make a personal commitment to the learning process of the LEAD program by pursuing doctoral-level course work, engaging in research, and serving as a member of the community of scholar-practitioners
  • Take responsibility for aspects of self-directed adult learning in an online delivery format
  • Construct a plan for elective course study in consultation with the Program Advisor and file the Program of Study forms at the appropriate time
  • Schedule a meeting with the Program Advisor at least one time per academic year to review and evaluate academic progress
  • Prepare for and contribute to advisement sessions in a meaningful manner
  • Maintain regular contact with the Program Office through UTC email 
  • Remain continuously enrolled in core course work, elective and research project of practice phases of the doctoral program
  • Prepare appropriately for the Comprehensive Assessment and transition to the Research Project of Practice
  • Seek support and additional resources if personal or professional issues interfere with academic performance
