Educational Leave
Educational Leave provides time away from work for eligible faculty and staff members to continue their education and/or participate in research, grants or fellowships. It is designed to facilitate educational opportunities for University employees while maintaining oversight and ensuring that both employee and University interests are met. Refer to UT Policy HR0335 Educational Leave for details.
Application Process
To request educational leave:
- Faculty members must submit an Application for Educational Leave of Absence form to their Department Head. Requests are handled by Academic Affairs and approved by the Chancellor.
- Staff members must submit a written request to their supervisor. Supervisors, in consultation with Human Resources, approve leave requests.
The request must specify the length of the leave. Each request for leave is evaluated on its own merits, and University approval will depend upon the justification and documentation provided.
Any approved leave extending beyond the current fiscal year is subject to budgetary constraints and/or funding availability.
Pay and Benefits While on Leave
The Leave of Absence policy provides guidance on situations that may result in leave of absence with or without pay and how benefits may be impacted. The Educational Leave policy provides details on retirement credit during educational leave, including the necessary forms that will need to be submitted.
