Captain A.J. Herink is a graduate of The University of Iowa where he earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Health Sciences. He also received his commission from the University of Iowa ROTC program in 2012.
Upon completion of the Basic Officers Leader Course in 2013, Captain Herink was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord where he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion (HIMARS), 94th Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Field Artillery Brigade where he served as a Liaison Officer from April 2013 to March 2014. Captain Herink was then assigned to Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion (HIMARS), 94th Field Artillery Regiment, where he served and deployed to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan in support of Operation Spartan Shield. Upon redeployment, he was assigned as the Battery Executive Officer for Alpha Battery from November 2014 to October 2015. In October 2015, he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion (HIMARS), 94th Field Artillery Regiment where he served and deployed as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer in Iraq and Turkey in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Captain Herink graduated from the Field Artillery Captains Career Course in January 2017 and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas where he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. While assigned to the “First Lightning” Battalion, he served as the Assistant Brigade Fire Support Officer from February 2017 to June 2017. Captain Herink was then assigned as the Battalion Fire Support Officer for 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment from July 2017 to August 2018. While serving as the Battalion Fire Support Officer, he deployed with 1-18IN to Romania and Bulgaria in support of Atlantic Resolve. In September 2018, CPT Herink assumed command of Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment. CPT Herink relinquished command of Bravo Battery in September of 2019, and he assumed command of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment in November of 2019. While in command of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, CPT Herink deployed the battery to the Republic of South Korea. In July of 2020, CPT Herink relinquished command of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and was assigned to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, 7th Brigade, United States Army Cadet Command where he currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Military Science.
Captain Herink is married to the former Dalicia Xayasouk of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with whom he has one daughter, Letty, and one son, C.J.
