ROTC Contracting
ROTC students at UTC have the option to contract their sophomore year, with the intent to graduate and commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Our Cadets are usually referred to as enrolled, contracted, or minor only.
Enrolled
Students who are enrolled in ROTC are exploring the Basic Course of the Military Science program. Enrolled students are not obligated to contract into the U.S. Army.
Contracting
ROTC students who meet the requirements and plan to commission into the U.S Army are expected to enter a contract and commit to completing the Basic and Advanced course requirements of ROTC - also known as contracting. Upon graduation, Cadets will enter the Army as an officer (Second Lieutenant) on Active, Guard, or Reserve duty. Most Cadets who are qualified to contract will do so in their sophomore year.
Contracting requirements include:
- Be enrolled in Army ROTC
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Have at least 30 credit completed
- Pass the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT)
- Meet Army medical requirements
- Meet Army height and weight standards
Typical Progression
Cadets typically start the ROTC program the first semester of their freshmen year. Students will progress through the Basic Course (first 2 years of college) and then proceed to the Advanced Course (last 2 years). The summer between their junior and senior year, Cadets will attend Cadet Summer Training (CST) at Fort Knox, KY.
Lateral Entry Options
If you are entering the ROTC program as a nontraditional student, there are options for you! Whether you are currently serving in the military or are transferring college credit from another university, you can still join ROTC if you have 2 years of school remaining. Please contact our Cadre team for more information!
Uniforms & Pay
Uniforms are issued to contracted ROTC Cadets. Textbooks for ROTC classes are provided. Issued items must be returned at the end of the school year or upon disenrollment from the ROTC program. Advanced course ROTC students sign a contract with the U.S. Government which requires them to complete the advanced course and accept a commission upon graduation (w/ exception of minor only students). Basic course students may contract upon meeting eligibility requirements. All contracted students receive a monthly stipend commensurate with their Military Science Level while enrolled in the program, and approximately $500 for attending camp, plus travel pay to and from camp. Scholarships are also available for qualifying students.
