ROTC Timeline
Army ROTC is split into two sections: Basic Course and Advanced Course.
Basic Course
Basic course (Military Science 1 and 2) is composed of the first 4 semesters of military science. No active-duty commitment is required at this time, with the exception of some ROTC National Scholarship recipients.
These first two years in ROTC will teach you about basic military skills, the fundamentals of leadership, operations and tactics, and goal setting and accomplishment.
The curriculum for Basic Military Studies is as follows:
- MILS 1040/1040L - Foundations of Officership (Fall Semester)
- MILS 1060/1060L - Basic Leadership (Spring Semester)
- MILS 1080r - Army ROTC Fitness Program (Fall & Spring Semesters)
- MILS 2040/2040L - Innovative Team Leadership (Fall Semester)
- MILS 2060/2060L - Foundations of Tactical Leadership (Spring Semester)
Advanced Course
Advanced course (Military Science 3 and 4) is composed of the last 4 semesters of military science. It requires 6 weeks of Cadet Summer Training (CST) at Fort Knox in Kentucky at the end of the junior (MS III) year. Students who successfully completed the advanced course, upon graduation, will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
These last two years in ROTC will teach you about advanced military tactics, team organization, planning, and decision-making.
The curriculum for Advanced Military Studies is as follows:
- MILS 1080- Army ROTC Fitness Program (Fall & Spring Semester)
- MILS 3040/3040L - Adaptive Team Leadership (Fall Semester)
- MILS 3060/3060L - Leadership in Changing Environments (Spring Semester)
- MILS 3080 - Military History (Fall OR Spring Semester)
- MILS 4040/4040L - Leadership and Management (Fall Semester)
- MILS 4060/4060L – Officership (Spring Semester)
Advanced Course Requirements
All cadets enrolled in the advanced course of the Army ROTC who seek a commission must:
- Have either completed the basic course, three (3) years junior ROTC, have the required amount of prior military service or completed the four-week basic camp. The basic summer camp is designed specifically to fill the needs of community and junior college graduates and students of four-year colleges who have not taken ROTC during their first two years. By attending the four-week camp, students qualify to enter ROTC directly as a junior. Attendance does not obligate an individual to enter the advanced ROTC program. Applicant must contact the Military Science Department to process early during the spring semester.
- Have two academic years of college remaining, either graduate or undergraduate.
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at UTC.
- Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to remain in program.
- Meet military screening and physical requirements.
Regularly enrolled students who meet the academic prerequisites and do not desire commission may take individual courses as electives with the approval of the department head and their academic advisor.
