Mocs Battalion History
History
In 1950, what was then the University of Chattanooga established its first ROTC program that built on Tennessee’s rich tradition of volunteer military service. The University of Chattanooga and Chattanooga City College went on to merge in 1969 with the University of Tennessee, one of the oldest land-grant universities in the nation, to form the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. The ROTC program remained a successful and integral part of the university as it turned out distinguished officers until it was selected for closure in 1994 due to national level budgetary cuts, being phased out in 1997.
In 2007 the ROTC unit was activated once again to meet the demand for quality Army officers as a satellite location under the ROTC program at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The Mocs Battalion now has over sixty cadets in the program, is supported by a five person on campus staff, and boasts an extensive alumni network both in Chattanooga and beyond.
