University Archives
On August 24, 1988, Chancellor Frederick W. Obear established the Library as the university's institutional memory, and authorized librarians to "coordinate the acquisition and administration of all records, documents, and reference materials pertaining to the history of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga." The University Archives works toward this goal by preserving and providing access to the administrative records, publications, ephemera, and photographs provided by the university. Included in our collections are records and photographs from UTC's predecessor institutions:
- Chattanooga University (1886-1889)
- Grant University (1889-1907)
- University of Chattanooga (1907-1969)
There are also some items pertaining to Chattanooga City College, and it's predecessor institution Zion College, which was merged with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1969.
Please note that a significant amount of our archival material is not yet represented anywhere online. This is especially true when researching the history of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. If you're researching UTC history, Special Collections staff can help you identify pertinent resources. Also note that the University Archives does not retain student records, course work, syllabi, or alumni records.
