Submission Guidelines for Course Reserves
-
Please allow sufficient time for processing reserve requests. The library processes materials as they come in. We strive for a 24-hour turnaround time; however, during peak times at the beginning of semesters it may take longer.
-
The UTC Library will make every effort to notify faculty of deadlines, policy and procedure changes, and general information pertaining to reserves via personal e-mail and faculty e-mail lists.
-
Inclusion of materials on reserve will be at the request of the faculty member for his or her educational needs.
-
Faculty are welcome to place personal copies of materials on reserve at their discretion. Please write your name, e-mail, and campus address inside the front cover of the item or physically attach a label to physical items.
-
The library cannot be held responsible for personal items that are lost by students. The library overdue and billing policy will be applied in these instances.
-
Personal items should be bundled together with a rubber band and dropped off at the UTC Library Check-Out Desk with a copy of the reserve form or reserve form confirmation email attached.
-
Items should be identified for reserves in the same manner as they are in your syllabus; complete bibliographic citations are appreciated. For example, if you provide the library with the title MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, do not list the item in your syllabus as MLA Citation Guide.
-
Faculty, UTC Library, or other department within UTC must possess a lawfully obtained copy of any material submitted for reserve. For example, items obtained via Interlibrary Loan or DVDs burned from a Netflix copy cannot be placed on reserve.
-
The library will assess each request to determine if it is currently available online via the Internet or the library's electronic resources. If an item is found, the persistent URL will be e-mailed to the faculty member for posting in UTC Learn.
-
All items will be removed from reserve one week following the last final exam day in the spring semester.
-
Faculty can reactivate a course for a subsequent semester prior to the removal deadline.

Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Course Reserves
-
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Library adheres to U.S. copyright law [United States Copyright Act of 1976]. In particular, Section 107, the Fair Use Doctrine, and Section 108, Reproduction by Libraries and Archives, each serves as the guiding principles behind the UTC Libraries' reserves and faculty scanning service policies and procedures.
-
Faculty must certify, on the Reserves Request Form, that each item complies with U.S. copyright law.
-
The UTC Library will assess each request for fair use and copyright compliance and reserves the right to reject requests or seek clarification from faculty if any copyright concern arises.
-
Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot place coursepacks, workbooks, or supplemental textbook materials, and materials requiring performance rights like musical scores and plays on reserve.
