Some properties will start renewing leases for the next school year over 10 months in advance, with others only 4-6 months in advance, and still others only 30-60 days in advance.  Regardless, the process is the same as tenants get the first chance to indicate that they wish to stay and retain their lease for another year.  Some properties also keep a waitlist going so that those who are interested in the property will be contacted first for apartments as they open up.  Many property partners will operate on an August-July 12-month lease calendar, though there are still many traditional properties who have leases starting at different points in the year.  No matter when you start or which property type you are looking to rent, this step-by-step timeline should keep things ordered for you to have the best experience.  You should start this process about a month before you want to start your formal search and sign a lease.
