Programs
Workshops, Webinars, Presentations, Guest Lecturer, and More
Throughout the year, OCSS will run or co-host a variety of programming to help students become more informed and prepared for their off-campus housing experience as well as make the most of their off-campus housing experience. Here is a brief synopsis of each programming workshop/webinar/discussion. Follow our calendar on MocSync to be sure you don't miss anything...or reach out to learn more.
- Freshman Live-On...Now What?
Off-Campus Student Services partners with Housing and Residence Life to ensure that students fully understand their options for housing beyond the First-Year Live-On requirement. Whether a rising Sophomore or entering your Senior year, join us to learn all about both housing processes, important deadlines, and myriad choices you have for housing. Knowing the timeline and process can help students make informed decisions and not miss any opportunities.
- Money Matters
OCSS partners with Financial Wellness to offer students a strategy to not only assess their financial situation but also plan and save for their future. In this workshop, students will not just talk about best practices in money management but also work hands on with staff to assess and analyze their own financial situations, leaving with the tools to stay on top of their money situation as well as a Budget Calculator.
- To Roommate or Not to Roommate?
OCSS revisits this age old debate. While exploring different considerations regarding roommates, OCSS will also help students discover tools and resources as well as practice the skills needed to find a good roommate. Like all programming, students not only thoroughly discuss the topic but leave with real skills and tools to continue the work on their own.
- The Ins and Outs of Moving
Though moving can be a subjective process as everyone has their particular way of packing and organizing their possessions, there are certain lessons and recommendations to make the process easier to manage and more painless, especially when dealing with off-campus housing properties. There are many more considerations that are often missed by those who have not moved in or out of a rental property (or who have not moved often). Come learn some tricks to take with you, along with a checklist that you help to make.
- Safety First
This is all about keeping you, your property, and your apartment safe while living off-campus. Partnering with UTC PD, OCSS walks students through steps they can take to ensure they have the best off-campus living experience. From daily habits to special reminders before breaks, there are many great tips and resources for students.
- Lease-Wise
Listen to legal and property experts discuss the strategies, nuances, and regulations regarding your lease so that you may sign with confidence. As a legally binding contract, it is important that you fully understand what it says. This presentation helps students learn the language, the important elements, and legal aspects of a lease, engaging with experts in the world of property leases.
- Won't You Be My Neighbor
Living with and near others can certainly be challenging, but following these 5 suggestions just might help you avoid issues, make new friends, or simply have a stress-free living environment. You will have to come to the workshop to learn these tips and practice the skills to reach your inner Mr. Rogers.
