Scholarships and Awards Information
The Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science offers several scholarship opportunities for deserving students as described below. Note that the following scholarships require applications:

Scholarship recipients will be selected by departmental faculty, and award notifications will be emailed to applicants in late March.
Geology
Hoover-Nofsinger Award
The Hoover-Nofsinger Award, established in 1998, is made possible by Dr. Sara Hoover and Ms. Norma Nofsinger, retired professionals that have taken geology classes and wish to assist other students majoring in geology. It is awarded to a deserving rising junior in the UTC Geology Program selected by the Geology faculty. The award is based on successful academic performance and/or financial need.
Lebron B. Carver Scholarship for Summer Field Studies or Research Activities
The Lebron B. Carver Scholarship Endowment was established in 2007 with a bequest from the estate of Lebron Carver, a 1950 Alumnus. This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in geology with an award amount up to $1000 for field camp, field courses, or research activities. Priority will be given to applicants applying to offset field camp or other field experiences. An application and letter of recommendation from a Geology faculty is required for this award with a deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Geology faculty, and award notifications will be emailed to applicants in late March.

Lebron B. Carver Scholarship
The Lebron B. Carver Scholarship Endowment was established in 2007 with a bequest from the estate of Lebron Carver, a 1950 Alumnus. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students majoring in geology. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Geology faculty.
Geology Award
The Geology Award is awarded to an outstanding Geology senior and is selected by the Geology faculty.
The Mineralogical Society of America Undergraduate Prize
This award recognizes an outstanding student who has shown outstanding achievement in Mineralogy. The awarded student receives a certificate and a student membership in the MSA with access to an electronic version of American Mineralogist and Elements, as well as a Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry or Monograph volume chosen by the student. The instructor of the fall Mineralogy course selects the awardee.
Biology and Environmental Science
Dr. Wilbur K. Butts Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1993 through a bequest from the estate of Alfred M. Butts in honor of his late brother, who was a faculty member for many years in the department of Biology. Partial tuition is awarded to an outstanding student who has been accepted or is enrolled in Biology, with demonstrated academic performance. Preference will be given to an entering outstanding Freshman (based on high school academic performance), and may be awarded up to four years if the recipient continues to demonstrate successful academic performance and remains a Biology major at UTC. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by department faculty.

Santiago Family Biology Scholarship
The Santiago Family Biology Scholarship is given to a biology student who desires to pursue a career in biology or post-baccalaureate program. The Santiago Family supported four children who completed 11 degrees in which they earned Bachelor’s of Science, Master’s of Science, and Doctoral degrees. Throughout these years, the family experienced and endured the monetary obligation required to accomplish their goals and wish to assist students who have a desire to earn a degree but require financial assistance.
Recipients must be a rising Junior or Senior, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in Biology courses, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need. The award will be $500 per year and may be split between up to two students. Preference will be given to non-traditional students. An application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by departmental faculty, and award notifications will be emailed to applicants in late March.
Santiago Scholarship Application Form
The Tucker Foundation Endowed Honors College Scholarship in Biology and Environmental Science
The Tucker Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a student involved in research on Stream Fish Ecology and Conservation or American Chestnut Restoration and Mycology. The recipient must be an undergraduate Biology or Environmental Science major in good standing with successful academic performance, and must be participating in undergraduate research or Departmental Honors work.
Dr. Robert L. Craig Scholarship in Biology
This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in biology who demonstrates successful academic performance and is involved in research. An application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by department faculty, and award notifications will be emailed to applicants in late March.

Louise G. Currey Environmental Studies Scholarship
Mrs. Louise Giddings Currey was a distinguished local environmentalist, church and civic worker. A host of organizations with diversified interests benefited from Mrs. Currey’s generosity and energy. During her later years, Mrs. Currey’s major concern was conservation. She was a board member of the Audubon Society and the Chattanooga Area Historical Society and held membership in the Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning, the Wilderness Society, the Sierra Club and the Garden Club of America. She was named the first life trustee of the Tennessee Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and was one of the founders of Nature Conservancy, a private group which acquired environmentally important sites for preservation.
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has been accepted for admission or is enrolled at UTC, and who has declared a major in some aspect of Environmental Studies. The student shall have demonstrated successful academic performance and/or financial need. An application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by department faculty, and award notifications will be emailed to applicants in late March.

Dr. Charles Robert Thomas Pre-Medical Scholarship
The Thomas Pre-Medical Scholarship was established under terms of the will of Dr. Charles Robert Thomas, a well-loved Chattanooga physician who died in 1968, and is intended to assist students in pre-medicine. The recipient must be a rising senior, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need. The award amount varies per academic year. The pre-medical scholarship application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Thomasson Pre-Medical Scholarship
The Thomasson Pre-Medical Scholarship was established in 1979 by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Thomasson to be awarded to a qualified and deserving undergraduate student who is pursuing pre-medical studies. The recipient must be a rising senior, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need. The award amount varies per academic year. The pre-medical scholarship application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1.
Joyce Litchford Memorial Scholarship
The Litchford Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. R. G. Litchford in honor of his late wife, Joyce Litchford. The recipient must be a rising senior, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate financial need. The award amount is $2,400 per academic year. The pre-medical scholarship application is required for this award with a submittal deadline of 11:59 pm on March 1.
