Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness
Outcomes Assessment
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is committed to institutional effectiveness and continuous improvement. As part of these efforts, outcomes assessment processes have been established. Anthology - Planning is used as a repository for student learning outcomes, service outcomes, assessment results, and strategic plans. By using the information captured in Anthology - Planning, UTC is able to provide evidence of outcomes assessment and results being used for continuous improvement.

- Outcomes Assessment and Curriculum Mapping Workshops
To support the outcomes assessment process, we offer two primary workshops: Plan, Engage, and Improve: Outcomes Development Workshop and the Curriculum Mapping Workshop. Both are available for individual registration multiple times throughout the year. In addition to these sessions, we provide one-on-one, individual, and group consultations, as well as customized workshops for colleges and departments. To schedule one of these sessions please email us at [email protected]. A description of each workshop is listed below:
Plan, Engage, Improve: Outcomes Development Workshop
Outcomes Development & Assessment focuses on strengthening understanding of outcomes assessment at UTC. It introduces the importance of assessment for student success and institutional effectiveness, highlights the assessment timeline, and shares insights from the previous reporting cycle. Participants learn how to develop strong outcomes using the SMART framework and indicate appropriate “Means of Assessment” and “Criteria for Success.” Emphasis is placed on reporting not just results, but also analysis of strengths, weaknesses, and improvement plans—ensuring the “closing the loop” process. The session also introduces the Assessment Guide and demonstrates how the Anthology – Planning platform supports reporting and documentation.

Curriculum Mapping Workshop
The curriculum mapping workshop introduces curriculum mapping as a tool to align courses with program learning outcomes. Faculty are guided in using the I-R-M-A (Introduced, Reinforced, Mastered, Assessed) framework to visualize where and how outcomes are addressed across the curriculum. The benefits of mapping—such as identifying gaps, reducing redundancies, and ensuring progression of learning—are discussed, along with best practices for faculty collaboration in developing maps. The workshop provides step-by-step instructions for building, reviewing, and uploading maps into Anthology – Planning. Curriculum maps become a required component of the institutional Outcomes Assessment process beginning with the 2025–26 assessment cycle, underscoring their importance in program improvement and accountability.
