Peer Mentors

Student Success Programs has three opportunities for current UTC students to become employed as SSP Peer Mentors. We use Peer Mentors to help staff Moc Up, Bridge, and First Year Studies. These are paid positions. Throughout the year, SSP Peer Mentors may also be asked to volunteer to staff certain First Year Experience-related events, such as Read to Achieve’s First Class and Mocs Flock Finley.

Apply to be a Peer Mentor

Moc Up (Summer)

A one-week program designed to help students transition to college that takes place in June. The role of the peer mentor includes connecting with students, being a leader of a small group of students, and assisting with the preparation for and the day-to-day logistics of the program.

Bridge (Summer)

This five-week program takes place in June and July and is designed to help students transition to college while earning 7-8 credit hours of coursework. The role of the peer mentor includes serving as a student leader who builds community amongst student participants and assisting with the day-to-day logistics of the program.

USTU 1250-The First Year Experience (Fall)

The First Year Experience course, often referred to as FYE, is a course that introduces students learning in and out of the classroom and the community and culture at UTC. The peer mentor will work closely with the instructor in planning and preparation for the course, including attending each class, assisting students with the transition to UTC and coordinating out-of-class activities.

First Gen Mentor Program (Fall, Spring)

The First Gen Mentor Program will match incoming first gen freshmen who opt into the program with both a peer and a faculty or staff mentor who is also first gen. The peer mentor will check-in with the first gen mentee at least four times during the first semester and then successfully hand the student off to their faculty/staff mentor the second semester of their first year.
