What is AdvanceU?

AdvanceU is a fun leadership and service-oriented Residential Learning Community (RLC) on the 3rd floor of Decosimo Apartments on South Campus. Drawing inspiration and engagement from Chattanooga’s history and rich resources, residents have an opportunity to explore ideas, to ask questions, to challenge themselves and other community members, to get involved, and to grow socially and academically. The 2023-2024 academic year will be the third year for this community, growing from 16 to 28 residents.

Who is eligible to be part of AdvanceU?

AdvanceU is open to incoming first-year students, returning sophomores, and transfers. Although AdvanceU works closely with the Arts and Sciences Residential College, there is no required major or academic interest to be part of AdvanceU.

What are some past AdvanceU events?

Past events over the last two academic years have included attending a traveling Broadway Play, Comedy Show, Escape Room, soap-making, community service, coffee shop tour, dinner, 1:1 coaching, and a discussion on impactful moments. Select activities are planned based on participant interest, availability, and commitment. Events are implemented by program assistants and the AdvanceU Staff Coordinator.

Do AdvanceU residents take a common course together?

AdvanceU students who have been accepted into UTC as a first-time college student and earned less than 30 credit hours do take a 1-credit elective eligible USTU 1250 course section focused on transitioning to college and leadership during the fall semester. This course section is instructed by the RLC Coordinator and a hired student peer mentor. A sample course template can be viewed here .  AdvanceU participants are highly encouraged to participate in 10-week leadership certificate program focusing on leading change (Moc LEAD) during the spring semester.

How do I apply to be part of AdvanceU?
