Applied Research |
Investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge but which is directed primarily towards a specific, practical aim or objective, often for a state, commercial, or client-driven purpose. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for applied research. |

Basic Research |
Theoretical or experimental inquiry without regard to particular applications or potential commercial value. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for basic research. |

Clinical Research |
Patient‐oriented medical investigation that either directly involves a particular person or group of people or uses materials from humans, such as their behavior or samples of their tissue which can be linked to a particular living person. Clinical research determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. Includes funding for projects where the primary purpose is to undertake an external funding to acquire or maintain facilities or equipment that will be used for clinical research. |

Conference/Seminar |
Use “Instruction” for conferences and seminars unless there is no instructional content associated with the conference / seminar. |

Institutional Support |
External funding for projects related to central executive-level activities concerned with management and long-range planning of the entire institution, fiscal operations, administrative data, information processing, HR/Personnel and non-academic facilities. |

Instruction |
Projects that improve or expand the instructional program including credit and ;non-credit courses, academic curriculum development and delivery, vocational and technical instruction, remedial and tutorial instruction, and community education. |

Projects that provide non‐instructional services that harness UTC’s intellectual and cultural resources to benefit individuals and communities external to the institution. |
