Importing from a Previous Course

You must have instructor-level (at least TA) access in both the previous course and the new course. For academic courses, the Walker Center grants such access (automatically to the instructor of record, and by request from that instructor for others). See Course Enrollment Form.

Whether you are importing an entire course, as in this video, or just one item such as an assignment or a rubric, the process is the same. Here we are using "all content" to copy the entire course.

Initial Cleanup

If we did not exclude Announcements in our import, we'll need to remove the non-relevant ones. Although optional, I also recommend removing the extra "assignment" group category that Canvas creates, which will keep your weighting a bit cleaner.

Setting Up Groups

If you're using groups for discussion and/or group projects, I recommend using "self-enroll" to allow students to sign up for a group. With groups, it is critical that you then set each assignment or discussion to use your "group set," and that students join a group before posting to the discussion board.

Updating the Dates!

We'll need to update all the dates on the modules, assignments, and discussion boards. You can use the SYLLABUS page to check for any you might have missed.

Links and Organization of Course

Try to avoid duplication--create one instance of a assignment (or page, or file, or whatever) and then LINK to that item wherever you need it. If your course is taught in a linear, chronological manner, strongly consider using weekly modules to make it obvious what you want the students to be doing each week.

Rubrics

Rubrics are a very powerful feature in Canvas that (as of November 2022) are notoriously cumbersome to implement.
