Advisor Training

Extensive training opportunities for advisors include Banner training, the advising handbook, case studies, hands-on activities and mentoring.
Regular refresher training activities are available as well.
NOTE: The Advisors’ Training Certificate modules do not provide individuals with access to any of the student information platforms such as Self-Service Banner, MyMocsDegree, or INB. In order to receive access to these platforms/systems, you must submit the Training Authorization Form and complete the appropriate trainings offered through the Registrar. Advisor Expectations
- 1a: Utilize the University web site, course catalog, class schedule, Clear Paths for Advising, and other University resources to provide accurate information.
- 2: Be knowledgeable in academic policies, procedures, processes, and deadlines at the University and department or unit levels.
- 3a: Be available during reasonable hours each semester for academic advisement, general questions, and performance concerns.
- 3b: Provide means for communicating, scheduling appointments, and keeping accurate, up-to-date records.
- 4: Refer students to other services, departments, or individuals as the situation requires.
- Advising with Technology (Introduction to Advising Required)

- Demonstrate how to use university platforms and software available for advisement (EAB, Self-Service Banner, MyMocsNet, and MyMocsDegree).
- Demonstrate how to effectively incorporate technology and e-resources when preparing for and during advising appointments.

- 1b: Clearly explain general education, major, degree, and graduation requirements for the program or unit under which they advise.
- 1c: Be knowledgeable in current prerequisites, course sequencing, and course offerings for their area.
- 1d: Be trained in academic advising functions in Banner, MyMocsDegree, Argos, and other university programs, as well as issues related to student development.
- 1e: Assist in creating an academic plan that incorporates the student’s major, minor, summer attendance, and desired graduation deadline.
- 2: Be knowledgeable in academic policies, procedures, processes, and deadlines at the University and department or unit levels.
- Advising Transfer Students (Introduction to Advising Required)

- Provide an overview of how to advise transfer students.
- Identify key issues with transfer course credits.
- Demonstrate how to access and use e-resources related to transfer course credits (PLA charts; Transfer equivalency charts; TTP sheets; TBR website).
- Explain UTC petition policies and processes.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of key issues with transfer course credits.
- Identify and execute course substitutions for transfer course credits.
- Use e-resources related to transfer course credits during advisement.
Advisor Expectations
- 1a: Utilize the University web site, course catalog, class schedule, Clear Paths for Advising, and other University resources to provide accurate information.
- 1b: Clearly explain general education, major, degree, and graduation requirements for the program or unit under which they advise.
