Lottery (TELS) Scholarship GPA Explanation
Why is the academic grade point average different from the TELS (lottery) grade point average?
The cumulative TELS (lottery) grade point average and the cumulative academic grade point average are calculated using different criteria. The criteria used to calculate the academic grade point average are defined by the faculty at UTC. The criteria used to calculate the TELS (lottery) grade point average are defined by The State of Tennessee Legislature.
What coursework counts in the academic grade point average?
The academic grade point average (GPA) includes coursework for which a student has attempted hours. Grades of S, NC, I and W do not count in the attempted hours. Institutional (or Developmental) coursework is not included in the academic GPA. A maximum of three permissible repeats can be excluded from the attempted and earned hours and GPA. These repeated grades are called replacement grades. Incomplete grades do not count until a grade has been assigned. Hours for failing grades count in attempted hours.
What coursework counts in the TELS grade point average?
The TELS grade point average encompasses all attempted hours, including all repeated and replaced coursework, all transfer coursework and all institutional coursework. Incompletes do not count towards the GPA. However, when the incomplete is changed to a letter grade the TELS GPA and funding may be retroactively impacted. Grades of S and NC do not count in the TELS grade point calculation but do count in the TELS hours toward the cumulative maximum.
What coursework does not count in the lottery grade point average?
The TELS grade point average does not include credit hours attempted prior to high school graduation (also known as dual enrollment coursework). It does not include Advanced Placement credit, audit credit, or continuing education coursework.
Why are the TELS attempted hours different from the academic attempted hours?

The academic attempted hours do not include withdrawals or replaced grades. Institutional coursework is listed separately as Continuation Totals and does not count toward hours required for graduation.
What are the TELS hours?
The TELS hours include all TELS attempted hours as well as withdrawals and grades of S and NC.
