Mrs. G, as we know her, has a thirty-seven year career in higher education student success programming. She has been the director of SSS since 1993. She is responsible for planning, directing, and modifying all services as they coincide with program objectives and student needs. During this time, she also taught Freshman Seminar and Principles of Effective Study courses.
A former first generation college student herself, Mrs. G is very passionate about making sure that SSS students have the support they need to graduate from UTC. Over the years, she has been the mastermind behind the successful award of more than 10 million dollars in external grants to fund 100% of SSS services. She uses cutting edge research to make decisions, carefully planning services and opportunities for students so they can experience success.
Mrs. G’s transformational leadership style has resulted in annual increases to students’ retention and graduation rates. In addition, she has been a pioneer in many SSS retention and educational initiatives that include:
- disability services
- underrepresented student graduate assistantships
- writing services
- STEM education support
- underrepresented student international education scholarships
- Black males initiative
- sophomore focus programming
- a nationally certified peer tutoring and coaching program
- comprehensive college retention and completion models
- non-cognitive skills development support
Since their inception, several of the services offered through SSS are intergrated into mainstream university and state initiatives.
Ms. Gholston accomplishments show a strong commitment to higher education, a high value on research, and unwavering determination to support underrepresented students on UTC’s campus.
