Equity-Oriented Pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework
What is Equity-Oriented Pedagogy and the Universal Design for Learning Framework?
Equity-Oriented Pedagogy gives every student the opportunity to achieve fair and comparable outcomes regardless of background, ability, or life experience. When learning environments are intentionally designed to reduce barriers utilizing the Universal Design for Learning framework, all learners can engage in rigorous, meaningful learning and experience success in the classroom.
What is the Universal Design for Learning Framework?
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for proactively creating accessible learning environments and experiences. Through the UDL lens, instructors design multiple and flexible strategies that are effective for our variable and diverse students.
Universal Design for learning improves educational outcomes for all students by ensuring meaningful access to the curriculum within an inclusive learning environment.
UDL aims to change the design of the environment rather than to change the learner. When environments are intentionally designed to reduce barriers, all learners can engage in rigorous, meaningful learning.
We have the authority and privilege to design learning environments that empower students to become motivated, purposeful, resourceful, and strategic or expert learners.
