Out-of-State Residency
Section 702 of the Veterans Choice Act
Enacted July 1, 2015
A covered individual enrolled in any public institution of higher education in this state shall not be required to pay out-of-state tuition or any out-of-state fee, if the covered individual:
- Is Eligible for Post-9/11 GI Bill® or Montgomery GI Bill®-AD benefits.
- A Veteran who lives in the state in which the Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) is located (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more.
- A spouse or child using transferred benefits who lives in the state in which the Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) is located (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of the transferor’s discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more.
- A spouse or child using benefits under the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship who lives in the state in which the Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) is located (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of the service member’s death in the line of duty following a period of active duty service of 90 days or more.
To determine eligibility, the following must be on file:
- Most students meet eligibility requirements by being enrolled at UTC and providing documentation of eligibility for Post 9/11 GI Bill® or Montgomery GI Bill®-AD benefits to Veteran Student Services.
- To verify you are living in Tennessee, we require one of the following forms of documents:
- Tennessee driver’s license
- Voter's registration card
- Copy of a lease or mortgage agreement for a property in Tennessee
- UTC Housing and Residence Life contract agreement AND the document showing your name, term and acceptance status (obtained from UTC Housing)
