A Moc's First Year
What is A Moc’s First Year?
A Moc’s First Year offers campus-wide learning communities to incoming first-time, full-time undergraduates. It helps personalize the transition experience to UTC.
You don't want to miss out on this amazing opportunity! You will join up to 24 students in two linked courses – forming a learning community. Each community includes a faculty member, who leads classroom discussions, makes campus connections and provides opportunities to explore your new college town. A Moc’s First Year is campus-wide and allows you to connect outside the classroom, foster community on campus and connect to the greater Chattanooga area.
Get ready to embark on an exciting journey that will set you up for success! Join A Mocs First Year to find your place at UTC.
What is a Learning Community?
A learning community occurs when a cohort of students are actively engaged in two or more courses linked together and have opportunities to engage with faculty members around a broad topic or question. Students will enroll in a First Year Experience (FYE) seminar and a general education or introductory level course. To form community, the student and faculty member will participate in both social and community events. Find a community that interests you. There are three ways to join a learning community:
- Enroll in a First Year Experience (FYE) seminar and a general education/introductory level course. Examples of paired classes in FYE Learning Communities:

- The Cuisines of Latin America (FYE) and LTAM 1250: Introduction to Latin American Studies.
