Counting Courses

First-time Freshman

Continuing Undergraduate

I’m a current student at UTC earning a bachelor’s degree for the first time.

Renew your aid each year by completing the FAFSA (available Oct. 1) and UTC scholarship application (available Aug. - February 1) every year, as early as possible.

After applying, check your Mocs Mail regularly. You’ll receive an email if the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships needs more information, and this is how you get all award notifications.

Good to know:

You will most likely receive similar financial aid throughout your degree program, if these conditions remain the same or don’t change too much:

  • Your family’s financial situation remains the same. Changes in income, marital status, number of family members in household or siblings enrolled in college will affect your eligibility for aid.
  • The federal, state and institutional funding of financial aid programs remains similar.
  • You submit all requested documents by the required deadlines.
  • You report accurate information on your FAFSA.
  • You meet UTC’s satisfactory academic progress requirements.

Transfer

I’m an undergraduate transferring with existing credits from another college or university.

Good to know:

Financial Aid does not automatically transfer and every school has a different application process.

  • If you are receiving fall aid at another school, you must notify officials at that school that you will not be returning in the spring so they can make necessary adjustments.
  • If you are receiving Tennessee state aid like the Tennessee Student Assistance Award (TSAA) or the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (HOPE), you need to change your school of choice with the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) by logging in to your TSAC student portal and listing UTC as your school of choice.
  • Update your FAFSA to include UTC (our code is 003529).
  • If you qualify for the HOPE scholarship, contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 423-425-4677 or [email protected] after Admissions receives all transcripts.
  • UTC cannot offer financial aid to transient students. You must be fully admitted and degree-seeking to receive financial aid at UTC.
  • Students cannot receive financial aid from two different institutions during the same term.
  • Any student transferring with more than 225 attempted hours is not eligible to receive financial aid at UTC.

Post-Baccalaureate

I already have a bachelor’s degree and am pursuing an additional undergraduate degree.

If you want financial aid, here’s what you need to do:

  • Get admitted as a Post-Baccalaureate (Post-Bac) degree-seeking student.
  • Enroll at least half-time (six credit hours)
  • Complete the FAFSA online at studentaid.gov.

Good to know:

Post-Bac students can receive only direct student loans at the undergraduate loan limit of $12,500 per academic year. Your student loan total cannot exceed the aggregate loan limit of $31,000 (dependent students) or $57,500 (independent students). This includes the loans you received while obtaining your previous bachelor’s degree.

Transient

I’m a degree-seeking student at another institution and I plan to enroll at UTC to take classes toward my degree. 

Good to know:

Students are not eligible to receive financial aid at more than one institution in one term. You must apply for financial aid at the institution where you are degree-seeking - - - your home institution.

As a transient student coming into UTC you are not eligible to receive financial aid at UTC, but you could receive financial aid at your home institution with a Consortium Agreement, also known as a Concurrent Enrollment. Not all schools will recognize Concurrent Enrollment, so you need to contact your home institution to see if it is an option.

Outgoing students:

As a UTC student, you can take classes at another institution and receive financial aid from UTC. You must be currently admitted to UTC as a degree-seeking student eligible for aid and be enrolled as a transient student at the host institution. Then, Please Pay Close Attention to the Following Steps and Notices - - 

  • Complete UTC's Concurrent Enrollment Form for the corresponding Semester. 
  • Provide all necessary information on the form (i.e. list course numbers, not course registration numbers).
  • Initiate the form 3-4 weeks prior to the beginning of the term. Completed documents must be received no later than the last day of semester. You are responsible for payment of fees at the host school.
  • Aid processed at UTC under a concurrent enrollment form will be available as a refund within two weeks after the first day of your class.
  • Funds are not sent to the host school; Students should set up a direct deposit through their MyMocsNet account.
