Assistive Technology
- UTC considers requests for the use of assistive and adaptive technologies or auxiliary aids on an individual, case-by-case basis.
- The Disability Resource Center offers a range of technologies and equipment to ensure equal access for individuals with disabilities at the University. If an individual has been approved for accommodation, including AT, they may choose to utilize one of the options available at the DRC.
- Equipment Checkout Process: the DRC has many pieces of technology that can help students engage in an equitable experience. During the access appointment, pieces of technology and available software can be discussed. This equipment can be checked out for the semester with the expectation that it is returned at the end of each semester. (If students do not return equipment, they will be charged a replacement fee.)
- Genio (Previously known as Glean)
- Genio (previously GLEAN) is our go-to note taking technology, so here is a video of Genio to familiarize yourself with the tech. (Just click on the video to play a quick tutorial). A registration email will be sent once your accommodation letters go out. Genio has a phone app for iOS and Android as well. If you want to know all the features and skills Genio has to offer check out their Student Skills Portal.
- Livescribe Pens
- Livescribe pens allow students to simultaneously record classroom audio while taking notes on physical paper. The specialized notebooks use microdot tracking to translate written text into a digital PDF. By connecting the pen to the Livescribe App on your device (computer or mobile), students can have the comfort of physical note-taking with reassurance that the recorded audio will ensure nothing is missed in the busy classroom setting. Download the Livescribe App.
- Kurzweil
- Register with our textbook software, Kurzweil and complete a book request form for each book for which you need an accessible version. Please provide as much of the requested information as possible, and proof of purchase is required before books can be distributed. We ask students to fill out the request form once per book, as it auto populates a spreadsheet for staff. If multiple Titles, ISBNs, and other information are provided at once, it will be crammed into one cell, slowing staff progress in distributing books.
Limited Adjustment to the Attendance Policy
- This accommodation will provide support when the student must miss a few days of class throughout the semester due to disability impacts. We typically see this accommodation in place for student with episodic or chronic impacts. This accommodation is considered complex and will require the DRC to interact with each of your instructors for consideration along with detailed medical documentation. This does not provide unlimited absences, so continued communication regarding this accommodation with the DRC will be necessary.
