Money Matters
Understanding the financial side of college is an important part of a student’s overall success at UTC. Whether your student is taking primary responsibility for paying for college or your family is providing significant financial support, a strong partnership is essential to ensure they have what they need to succeed. Families play an important role as students learn to manage financial responsibilities. While college is often a time for students to build independence, ongoing financial conversations and shared planning can provide clarity, confidence, and stability throughout their college experience.
Understanding the Financial Side of College
College finances can feel complicated at first, but understanding the basics makes a big difference. When students stay informed about their financial responsibilities, they are more likely to avoid unnecessary stress and stay focused on their academic goals.
Being financially aware helps students avoid late fees, dropped courses, registration holds, maintain eligibility for financial aid, plan and budget effectively, and make informed decisions about loans. Simply knowing where to look for information and paying attention to deadlines can prevent many common challenges.
The Bursar’s Office manages student billing and payments. This is where tuition and fee statements are issued, payments are processed, payment plans are managed, and refunds are generated. Encourage your student to regularly review their student account and be mindful of payment deadlines. Missing a deadline can result in late fees or impact class registration.
Navigating Financial Aid
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships along with the Mocs One Center supports students in securing funding to help make their education possible. Financial aid may include scholarships, grants, Federal Work-Study, and student loans.
To receive and maintain aid, students must complete required applications such as the FAFSA and submit any requested documentation on time. Eligibility can also be affected by enrollment status and academic progress, so it is important for students to understand what is required to remain in good standing. Beyond eligibility, students must also understand the renewal criteria for their aid as well.
Encourage your student to regularly check their UTC email and never ignore messages from Financial Aid and Scholarships on updates, reminders, and next steps that may need to be completed. Many financial aid challenges can be avoided by responding promptly to requests for information and staying aware of important deadlines.
FERPA and Access to Financial Information
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of a student’s educational records, including financial information. Once a student enrolls in college, financial and academic records belong to the student, regardless of who is paying the bill.
If families would like access to billing or financial aid information, students must grant permission through MyMocsPass. Without this authorization, university staff cannot share specific account details.
Encourage open communication within your student about financial expectations and responsibilities. Establishing clear communication early can prevent confusion and ensure everyone understands their role.
Tips for families
- Talk early about financial expectations, including who is responsible for what.
- Encourage your student to check their UTC email and student portal regularly.
- Pay attention to deadlines for payments, FAFSA deadlines, and requested documentation.
- Help your student create a realistic semester budget that includes books, housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses, not just tuition and fees.
- Have an open conversation about credit cards, including responsible use, interest rates, and how to avoid accumulating unnecessary debt.
- Discuss whether an on-campus job might be a good fit. Working on campus can help students earn income while building time management skills and connections.
- Talk about everyday financial decisions such as meal plans, spending habits, and saving for unexpected expenses so your student feels prepared beyond the cost of attending school.
- Encourage your student to ask questions and contact the Bursar or Financial Aid and Scholarships when something is unclear.
