Your Impact. My Gratitude.

The “Your Impact / My Gratitude” Challenge Coin is a symbol of connection, reflection and deep appreciation at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Each UTC student receives this coin during their academic journey, with the intent that it be given away, along with a hand-written letter, in their final semester before graduation. It is not kept as a souvenir, but instead offered as a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to a faculty or staff member who has made a meaningful impact along the way. 

Whether through academic mentorship, personal encouragement or behind-the-scenes support, the recipient of this coin has helped shape a student’s path to success.

The inspiration for this tradition stems from the legacy of military challenge coins, which date back over a century and were initially used to honor service, recognize achievements and foster unity. 

Over time, challenge coins have come to symbolize pride and personal connection in both military and civilian life. At UTC, this coin is a tribute to the life-changing relationships built on our campus.

For the student, giving this coin is a moment to pause, reflect, and say, “Thank you for helping me get here.” For the recipient, it is a profound honor—an acknowledgment that their work made a difference in someone’s story.

This coin reflects the values we hold dear at UTC: impact, gratitude and the power of human connection. It is more than a token. It is a shared milestone—one that honors the past, celebrates the present and will be remembered for years to come.
