Chancellor's Challenge Coins

The Chancellor’s Challenge Coins represent a meaningful tradition at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga—one rooted in gratitude, storytelling and the spirit of connection that defines our campus community.

Each UTC student receives two coins during their time at the University. These coins are not simply keepsakes; they are meant to symbolize both reflection and inspiration and shared at a pivotal moments in their journey.

One coin reads “Your Impact / My Gratitude.” This coin is given to a UTC faculty or staff member who made a significant difference in the student’s academic career. It’s a way to honor those who mentored, challenged or supported our students along the path to graduation.

The second coin bears the message “Your Story. Be Curious and Bold.” This coin is given to someone the student hopes to inspire to attend UTC—a family member, a friend, a mentee. It is an invitation to write their own story here, with curiosity and courage.

Challenge coins have a rich tradition, dating back over a century. Originating in the military, they were used to recognize service, build camaraderie and commemorate shared experiences. Our Challenge coins carry that spirit forward, tailored to the values of higher education, student success and personal impact.

This tradition reflects UTC’s belief that everyone’s story matters. From the mentors who guide us to the future Mocs we encourage, we are all part of something greater.

These coins are a celebration of the journey, a thank you to those who shaped it, and a challenge to those who will take the next step.
